Types of Pothos That Are Fun to Grow and Display
Pothos are probably one of the most popular type of plant. It's a cute addition to our house as well, but what type suits you best?

Sharing is caring!

Pothos are unquestionably among the easiest and most popular houseplants to maintain. They flourish inside and can tolerate a variety of lighting settings. They are also excellent vining plants, making them popular for hanging baskets and pots.

Pothos are commonly thought to be variants of the Epipremnum aureum plant. However, there are several additional vining plants known as pothos that are similar in care and look, so we’ve included them here. Continue reading for 18 pothos varieties to grow and show in your house.

WARNING

All Epipremnum species are considered poisonous to both cats and dogs.

Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

The golden pothos is the most widely available pothos on the market, with waxy, heart-shaped green leaves with yellow variegation. It is a quick grower that thrives in a wide range of light situations, from low light to bright, indirect light.

Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
  • Leaf color: Green with yellow variegation.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Low to bright indirect light.

Marble Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Marble Queen’)

The marble queen pothos can commonly confused with the golden pothos due to comparable leaf detail; however, this variety can be differentiated by its white/cream variegation. It is a highly variegated variety that requires somewhat more light than the golden pothos to maintain its variegation. A position with medium to brilliant indirect lighting is good.

Marble Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Marble Queen’)
  • Leaf color: Green with white variegation.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Medium to bright indirect light.

Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Jade’)

The jade pothos is an excellent choice for those with limited natural light due to its strong jade-green foliage. It performs effectively in a variety of lighting circumstances, from dim to bright, indirect light. The leaves of the jade pothos are slightly slimmer than those of the golden and marble queen pothos, but they are both heart-shaped and waxy.

Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Jade’)
  • Leaf color: Medium green.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Low to bright indirect light.

Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Neon’)

The neon pothos has vivid green-yellow foliage and is commonly confused with the lemon-lime philodendron due to their similar colour. It thrives in medium to bright, indirect light, which helps it maintain the vibrancy of its neon leaves.

  • Leaf color: Bright green-yellow.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Medium to bright indirect light.

Dragon’s Tail Pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum)

The dragon’s tail pothos differs from most pothos varieties in that it is an Epipremnum pinnatum rather than Epipremnum aureum. Despite this, it is still considered a pothos, and its care is very similar. The dragon’s tail pothos is characterized by small, thin, and jade-green leaves that grow large and develop fenestrations as it matures.

Dragon's Tail Pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum)
  • Leaf color: Jade green.
  • Leaf size: Small (juvenile), large (mature).
  • Light: Medium to bright, indirect light.

Cebu Blue Pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Cebu Blue’)

The neon pothos has vivid green-yellow foliage and is commonly confused with the lemon-lime philodendron due to their similar colour. It thrives in medium to bright, indirect light, which helps it maintain the vibrancy of its neon leaves.

Cebu Blue Pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Cebu Blue’)
  • Leaf color: Silvery blue-green.
  • Leaf size: Small (juvenile), medium (mature).
  • Light: Bright indirect light.

Baltic Blue Pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Baltic Blue’)

The baltic blue pothos is a clone of the dragon tail pothos, Epipremnum pinnatum. It differs from the Cebu blue and dragon tail pothos by having dark green foliage with a blue undertone. It also has bigger leaves and develops fenestrations earlier than Cebu blue pothos.

Baltic Blue Pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum 'Baltic Blue')
  • Leaf color: Deep green-blue.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Medium to bright, indirect light.

Global Green Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Global Green’)

The global green pothos is a relatively new pothos with mottled foliage of dark and light green. The leaf colour is similar to that of the n’joy, pearl, and jade pothos. While this pothos is still considered unusual, garden centers and nurseries are beginning to stock it more frequently as its popularity develops.

Global Green Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Global Green')
  • Leaf color: Light green and dark green.
  • Leaf size: Small.
  • Light: Medium to bright, indirect light.

Pearls and Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Pearls and Jade’)

The pearls and jade pothos is a patented cultivator of the marble queen pothos developed at the University of Florida. It has smaller and thinner foliage than the marble queen, with white-edged light green leaves with cream and white variegation and green streaks throughout. This pothos variety is known for its slow growth and demands greater light than other pothos kinds.

Pearls and Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Pearls and Jade')
  • Leaf color: White-edged light green leaves, white/cream variegation.
  • Leaf size: Small.
  • Light: Medium to bright, indirect light

N’Joy Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘N’Joy’)

With its little, papery-thin green and white leaves adorned with white/cream variegation, the n’joy pothos appears almost identical to the pearls and jade pothos to the untrained eye. They are, nevertheless, separate varieties. The variegation is the easiest way to tell them apart—the white variegation on the n’joy pothos has no green splotches, whereas the pearls and jade pothos has green splotches in its white variegation.

N'Joy Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'N'Joy')
  • Leaf color: White-edged light green leaves, white/cream variegation.
  • Leaf size: Small.
  • Light: Medium to bright indirect light.

Glacier Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Glacier’)

We’ve already addressed the pearls and jade pothos, as well as the n’joy pothos, which are nearly identical. To add to the confusion, there is now a third variety to consider: glacial pothos. Its foliage is quite similar to that of the pearls and jade pothos, however, it may be differentiated by its somewhat silvery colour. It also has smaller and rounder leaves than pearls, jade, and n’joy pothos. Unfortunately, glacial pothos is a somewhat uncommon type that might be difficult to locate. If you do manage to obtain one, make sure to provide it with medium to bright, indirect light to promote healthy growth and consistent variegation.

Glacier Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Glacier')
  • Leaf color: White-edged light green leaves, white/cream variegation, silvery hue.
  • Leaf size: Small.
  • Light: Medium to bright, indirect light.

Manjula Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Manjula’)

Manjula pothos is a unique pothos type with creamy yellow-white leaves and light and dark green variegation. It is a patented variety that was developed at the University of Florida. While this pothos can tolerate low light levels, it prefers bright, indirect light wherever feasible.

Manjula Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Manjula')
  • Leaf color: Creamy white leaves, green variegation.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Bright, indirect light.

Satin Pothos (Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’)

The Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus,’ often known as the satin pothos, is technically not a pothos because it is not a member of the Epipremnum genus, but its appearance and care are comparable, so it is worth adding here. It has small, shimmering green and silver leaves and a vining growth habit.

Satin Pothos (Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus')
  • Leaf color: Green with light green spots and a shimmery hue.
  • Leaf size: Small.
  • Light: Low to bright, indirect light.

Silver Satin Pothos (Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’)

The silver satin pothos, technically another Scindapsus pictus type, has huge, thick leaves with silvery splashes. Its foliage is larger and darker than the argyraeus variety, with substantially larger, darker leaves overall. Place this pothos in a spot that receives bright, indirect light to avoid lanky growth.

Silver Satin Pothos (Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’)
  • Leaf color: Dark green with shimmery silver variegation.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Bright, indirect light.

Jessenia Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Jessenia’)

Costa Farms identified the jessenia pothos, a stable sport of the marble queen pothos, in 2014. It features green and yellow-green foliage that is extensively variegated. To support its variegation, the jessenia pothos prefers medium to bright, indirect light, while it may thrive in low-light settings as well.

Jessenia Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Jessenia')
  • Leaf color: Medium green leaves with yellow-green variegation.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Medium to bright, indirect light.

Variegated Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Neon Variegata’)

While spots of tiny variegation are usual on a conventional neon pothos, the variegated neon pothos is differentiated by consistent variegation of vivid green/yellow throughout its leaves. Its variegation will begin to revert under low light circumstances, so a site that receives strong, indirect light is preferable for this pothos.

Variegated Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Neon Variegata’)
  • Leaf color: Variegated bright green/yellow.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Bright, indirect light.

Snow Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Snow Queen’)

The snow queen pothos, not to be confused with the marble queen pothos, is a highly variegated pothos type with magnificent white/cream foliage decorated with fine streaks of medium green variegation. Because of the limited quantity of green on its leaves, it requires a position with bright, indirect light to keep the leaves from turning brown.

Snow Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Snow Queen')
  • Leaf color: White with medium green variegation.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Bright, indirect light.

Harlequin Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Harlequin’)

The harlequin pothos is without a doubt the rarest pothos available, with beautifully variegated white and dark green foliage. It resembles the manjula pothos in appearance, but it lacks the cream/yellow coloration. It needs strong, indirect light to support its vibrant variegation.

Harlequin Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Harlequin')
  • Leaf color: White with dark green variegation.
  • Leaf size: Medium.
  • Light: Bright indirect light.

Conclusion

Pothos are fun-type of plants that are easy to grow and fun to maintain. However, what we don’t know is that there are plenty of varieties to choose from. We hope that this article gave you an idea of what type of pothos are perfect for you and your home.
